Intel’s McAfee Unit Confirms Coming Job Cuts

Wall Street Journal – McAfee Inc., the computer security unit of Intel Corp., INTC -0.75% confirmed that it is planning to lay off a small number of employees.

The software company employed 7,072 at the end of June. Ian Bain, a McAfee spokesman, said he could not provide any more information about the job cuts, which were reported earlier by Reuters.

McAfee, which competes with companies such as Symantec Corp., SYMC -1.50%provides antivirus programs and other security software.

Intel, which makes computer chips, announced a $7.68 billion deal to buy McAfee in August 2010. The purchase, which closed in 2011, was the biggest in Intel’s history. Intel in September warned that revenue would be less than it previously predicted, citing macroeconomic conditions and other factors.
